What is Full Grain Leather?

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEATHER

BEING A NATURAL PRODUCT, LEATHER IS PRODUCED VARIOUS DIFFERENT WAYS, LEADING TO MANY DIFFERENT QUALITIES OF LEATHER. BELOW YOU WILL FIND SOME OF THE MAIN ONES THAT ARE USED TO MAKE BELTS. ALL AREIRA INC. BELTS ARE MADE USING FULL GRAIN LEATHER.

FULL GRAIN LEATHER

THIS TYPE OF LEATHER IS THE HIGHEST QUALITY LEATHER AVAILABLE. IT IS CALLED FULL GRAIN BECAUSE IT USES ALL OF THE GRAIN OF THE TOP LAYER OF THE HIDE. THESE HIDES ARE NOT SANDED, BUFFED, OR SNUFFED TO REMOVE IMPERFECTIONS OR NATURAL MARKS ON THE SURFACE OF THE HIDE. THE GRAIN REMAINS ALLOWING FIBER STRENGTH AND DURABILITY. RATHER THAN WEARING OUT, IT DEVELOPS A PATINA DURING ITS EXPECTED USEFUL LIFETIME.

TOP GRAIN LEATHER

THIS IS THE MOST COMMON TYPE IN HIGH-END LEATHER PRODUCTS, BUT THE SECOND-HIGHES IN QUALITY. IT HAS HAD THE “SPLIT” LAYER SEPARATED AWAY, MAKING IT THINNER AND MORE PLIABLE THAN FULL GRAIN. ITS SURFACE HAS BEEN SANDED AND A FINISH COAT ADDED, WHICH PRODUCES A COLDER, PLASTIC FEEL WITH LESS BREATHABILITY, AND IT DOES NOT DEVELOP A NATURAL PATINA. IT IS TYPICALLY LESS EXPENSIVE AND HAS GREATER STAIN RESISTANCE THAN FULL GRAIN LEATHER IF THE FINISH REMAINS UNBROKEN.

GENUINE LEATHER

THIS LEATHER IS THE THIRD-HIGHEST IN QUALITY. IT IS MADE FROM THE REMAINING LAYERS OF HIDE AFTER THE TOP LAYER IS SPLIT OFF. THE SURFACE OF THIS LEATHER CAN HAVE DIFFERENT FINISHES ADDED TO IT, TO MAKE IT APPEAR AS HIGHER QUALITY LEATHER. IT USUALLY DOES NOT HAVE HIGH DURABILITY.
